This backyard space had once been a refuge for the homeowners but over time had fallen into disrepair, causing anxiety about how to refresh it. Thankfully, they reached out to us to help them re-imagine their outdoor space.
Before
A major issue was the failing retaining wall, causing the limestone tiles to shift and creating an uneven surface. Immediately after our consultation, I advised repairing this to establish a strong foundation for further improvements. Connecting the homeowners with a reliable contractor was crucial, as a sturdy retaining wall would frame and enhance the yard's usability and beauty.
Design
With the retaining wall repaired, we focused on re-imagining the backyard's layout. Overgrown shrubs behind the pool obstructed views and made the space feel enclosed. Understanding the need for privacy balanced with openness, we decided to replace the shrubs with a low fence along the back. Although the idea initially met resistance from the homeowners who were attached to the hedge, we managed the transition smoothly, minimizing any visual disruption during installation. The addition of a solid fence at the back and a wire fence along the side not only provided privacy but also opened up the space.
Given the existing abundance of limestone, albeit requiring us to hunt down additional material during COVID which made it challenging, we prioritized sustainability by reusing materials wherever feasible. We redesigned the hardscape to achieve a modern, functional layout that enhanced the overall usability of the yard. We not only added a new layout to the limestone patio but we also added a cozy and inviting deck so entertaining could extend further into the space.
The original outdoor kitchen layout posed challenges with a non-functional BBQ, deteriorating stucco, and awkward arrangement. To address these issues, we reconfigured the layout to accommodate bar stools, upgraded to a quartzite counter, and added light blue tile accents that mirrored the pool's aesthetic. The installation of new appliances transformed the kitchen into a stylish and functional centerpiece of the backyard.
Understanding the homeowner's passion for gardening, we created designated garden beds along the side of the house. This not only provided a neat and organized space for gardening activities but also added to the yard's visual appeal. Additional fruit trees were planted in the lower area beyond the open fence, blending practicality with beauty.
